Barratt London have won planning permission for two tower blocks in a scheme also designed to enhance the existing St Michael and All Angels Church.
The developers will build blocks of 25 and 21 storeys at the top of North End, adjacent to where the Croydon Partnership’s new £1billion shopping scheme will be built.
The St Michael’s Square scheme, designed by Assael Architecture with Quod acting as consultants, will include 68 one-bed flats, 140 two-beds and 24 three-beds including affordable housing and disabled parking.
It will also feature a new public square with space for shops and cafes, a pedestrian link between Poplar Walk and Station Road and space for cycle storage.
To make way for the scheme the existing buildings at 6 to 44 Station Road, between West Croydon station and the existing Whitgift shopping centre, will be demolished.
The scheme, which forms part of the West Croydon Masterplan, will open up views to the Grade I Listed St Michael and All Angels Church, also includes new pedestrian links to and from West Croydon Station and the shopping centre.
Barratt intend to start on site this year with an expected completion date of 2019.
