Croydon has secured two awards for architectural excellence at the Royal Institute of British Architects Awards.
Boxpark Croydon and West Croydon Bus Station were both among the winners of London regional awards.
BDP’s design of Boxpark, constructed from 96 upcycled shipping containers, was honoured with RIBA describing it as a “brilliantly extroverted take on the traditional indoor market”.
Like its predecessor Boxpark Shoreditch, the new venue is constructed from shipping containers but the Croydon venue, with more than 40 outlets under one roof, is exclusively dedicated to food, drink and entertainment.
The architect behind West Croydon’s £2.17m bus station was named regional project architect of the year.
Commenting on the design by Martin Eriksson, an in-house designer at Transport for London, the judges said: This is a charming and creative building made possible by a young and ambitious client representative and in-house architect team.
“It is a first building in what the jury hopes will be a continuing programme to improve the quality of bus stations across London.
“It makes a brilliant case for the value of beautiful design and aesthetics on even small-scale transport infrastructure.”
