Pumping fresh life into a forgotten area

A forgotten part of Croydon is to be transformed into a Covent Garden-style events space.

Developers Guildhouse Rosepride plan to turn Exchange Square into a new destination in Croydon’s historic Old Town with small shop units, food and drink outlets and a partly-covered space for activities and events.

The plans include refurbishment and extension of the former Pump House – bringing it back to life as a tech hub, music/art venue, café and restaurant.

“Bringing this area back to life is so important because the Pump House is a fantastic building,” said David Hudson, chief executive of Guildhouse.

“All these offices and apartments are being built in Croydon and the occupiers will want somewhere to go and eat and be entertained.

“We are keen to do everything we can to make Croydon a highly desirable place to live and work.

“The idea is to provide complementary activity to Surrey Street Market and also to create a home for retailers while the new shopping centre is closed for redevelopment.

“We anticipate that by the time the new Westfield opens, Exchange Square will be established as a destination in its own right.”
