Croydon will be home to a brand new flagship Marks & Spencer anchor store as part of the Croydon Partnership’s £1.4billion Whitgift Centre redevelopment.
The retail giant has been working with developers Westfield and Hammerson since the start of the year on a brand new store which will complement the delivery of a three-level retail scheme in the heart of the town centre.
The updated scheme means Marks & Spencer will be relocated to a brand new building, selling a wide range of clothing, homeware and food in a new modern retail environment, rather the previously planned refurbishment of the existing building.
Helen Nash, head of property at M&S said: “We’re working with the Partnership to consider how we can best serve our customers in Croydon. Our proposed new store will help us deliver the very best of M&S from the heart of the new development.”
The overall scheme is designed to transform Croydon into a retail and leisure hub for south London, acting as a catalyst for the wider regeneration of the town.
Robin Dobson, Hammerson’s director of retail development, said: “These important changes to our existing scheme allow us to deliver an improved retail environment, a flagship M&S store and better integration with West Croydon together with over 5,000 new jobs as well as new homes.
“We believe the enhanced scheme will be a major draw attracting more visitors, residents and wider investment and employment into the town.”
