Lumiere London 2018 lights are coming to Croydon

The Lumiere London 2018 festival of lights has been drawing the crowds across the capital and many of the incredible artwork are now coming to Croydon.

Commissioned by the Mayor of London, the 2018 festival’s artwork reimagines London’s architecture and streets, transforming the city into a dazzling nocturnal art exhibition.

And now the main festival is over, many of the artworks are coming to Thornton Heath for the Thornton Heath Light Festival on Saturday, January 27, which will transform Trumble Gardens into an illuminated wonderland.

The festival will be made up of over 100 lanterns, with designs including foxes, giant flowers, badgers and hedgehogs.

It will feature the extraordinary nightlife commission planned for Leicester Square, that’s been created by Jo Pocock and the Lantern Company.

The festival will also feature a series of illuminated festoons made from recycled bottles by local volunteers, which will form another part of the overall London spectacle before being brought to Croydon.

The event will coincide with the second CR7 market which will operate from the forecourt at Ambassador House between 12pm and 6pm before relocating to Trumble Gardens for the night-time market and light festival between 4pm and 9pm.

As well as the market’s food, drink, arts and crafts stalls, there will also be performances of singing, dance and spoken word showcasing the finest local talent.

Councillor Timothy Godfrey, cabinet member for culture, leisure and sport said: “We are delighted to be part of London Lumiere 2018 and I’m particularly excited to see the display of chandeliers created by local residents.

“Croydon is the only borough outside of the main festival, to be showcasing some of the West End exhibits as part of our own festival in Thornton Heath.”

Thornton Heath Light festival and the CR7 night-time market are taking place on Saturday 27 January between 4pm and 9pm. Both are free to attend but tickets must be booked in advance.
