Croydon’s transformation into an international location is real according to council leader Tony Newman.
He told the Develop Croydon Conference that partnerships with developers, the Mayor of London and government were essential to bringing the changes to infrastructure and transport which would drive the borough forward.
“The development is real, the investment is real and the council is very much playing a leading in supporting it all,” Mr Newman said.
“Earlier this week I suggested East Croydon station be named Croydon International. A few years ago that might have caused an outcry but a lot of people said they were behind that.

“We are an international location, with connectivity, and we have one of the most internationally diverse populations in London.
“It seems to make sense so we are going to have a conversation about that with people like Eddie Lister from the GLA and others.”
Mr Newman also outlined his vision to bring a bit of the South Bank to Croydon as part of an overhaul of Fairfield Halls, hosts of the conference, and neighbouring College Green.
“The building we are standing in now will be subject to a £30million investment,” he added.

“Last night I was at a fantastic concert at the South Bank and when you see how that has been transformed in recent years as a venue of destination, that’s very much the vision for this building.
“That is going to happen in a few years with the development of College Green which will include a brand new college.
“Huge changes are happening, the change is real and it is happening us around us now.
“We have an opportunity and privilege to be able to shape the change that is happening and transform Croydon into a vibrant modern international and European city on the edge of London.”
*A poll of delegates on the day suggested that the name of East Croydon station should remain as it is.
