Images of a new café planned for Queen’s Gardens have been revealed.
A revamp of the town centre park, which is bordered by Katharine Street and Fell Road, is part of the Taberner House development, where HUB are building 513 new homes, designed by architects AHMM, on the site of the old council offices.
HUB recently held a competition for young, local architects put forward by AHMM to present their designs for the café. Dora Felekou was selected as the winner for her ‘House of Cards’ proposal.
“The structural elements of House of Cards all bear different colour treatments that are inspired by Croydon’s street art and are also a symbol of the diverse local community,” said Ms Felekou.
“The café’s design is adaptable, it grows with the residents, changing and always versatile, it becomes the centre of their collective memories.”
Steve Sanham, managing director of HUB, said: “The designs produced by AHMM’s young architects are a really interesting mix and show a great range of approaches to the site and I believe the selected design is a worthy winner.
“We have worked very closely with the community in a collaborative design process to produce a briefing for a café that people in Croydon will really enjoy.”
Work on the site has been ongoing since May and is expected to be complete by 2021.
