MDR Associates have helped developers Oakwood secure planning permission for 75 new flats and commercial space at a difficult site near to Coulsdon railway station.
The London Borough of Croydon has approved plans to build one, two and three bedroom apartments plus 484 sq metres of commercial floor space on a 4,000 square metre site after MDR made landscaping a priority of the proposed scheme.
The proposals for the site, which currently houses a garage and other industrial buildings, were backed after four local residents associations wrote in support of the scheme, while their representative Charles King spoke in favour at the planning meeting.
Andre Fagan, architectural director of MDR Associates, said: “We are delighted to have been able to design a scheme which not only one approval but has also been supported by local residents.
“This was a complex site given it is bounded by the railway to the north and the east and we believe the five character buildings are not only in keeping with but will enhance the character of Coulsdon.
“Landscaping of the site was a priority of the development to create an attractive environment and a sense of space for residents as well as those arriving at Coulsdon Town railway station.”
Paul Scott, the council’s deputy cabinet member for planning, praised the scheme, describing it as a difficult site for the developer.
Oakwood director Matt Arnold said: “We are delighted to have received a resolution to grant outline planning permission for this important regeneration site.
“We would like to thank everyone who participated through the consultation process over the last 15 months.”
The developers intend to start work on site in the second quarter of 2017.
