Croydon Council is proposing changes to The Croydon Flyover, Roman Way and Old Town.
These changes will be suggested as part of a bid to Transport for London (TfL) for up to £10 million for improvements to make it easier to walk and cycle to the town centre. The bid will likely include many of the proposals recommended in the Old Town Masterplan, that was developed in 2012.
There is now a period of consultation for the public to give their views on the current proposals, with people being encouraged to complete a short online survey, by 16 November: www.croydon.gov.uk/liveableneighbourhoods
If successful, the project will commence in summer 2019 and be completed by March 2022.
The plans proposed include:
Creating a new cycle route along the length of Roman Way, Old Town and southern end of Mitcham Road.
Transform Old Town Roundabout by infilling the subways, creating new crossings on the roundabout.
Introducing new creative lighting under the flyover and planting more greenery to improve air quality.
Creating a better pedestrian and cycle crossing on Roman Way between St Johns Road and Rectory Grove to act as a gateway to Old Town to link up with the improvements to the green space around the Minster Church as part of the Old Town Masterplan proposals.
Improving the junction at Roman Way, Factory Lane and Derby Road to make east-west movement between Factory Lane Industrial Estate and Croydon Town Centre easier.
Introducing new pedestrian crossings on Mitcham Road between Derby Road and Sumner Road to make it easier and safer to cross Mitcham Road.
Reducing the external traffic cutting through the residential area between Mitcham Road and London Road to improve safety on Albion Street, Gardeners Road and Parsons Mead.
Transforming the car parks and underpasses under Roman Way flyover with creative lighting and public realm artwork to make them more inviting and pleasant places to pass through.
Looking at new and exciting ways of using these spaces instead of just for car parking.
Installing green walls and screens on the Roman Way flyover to improve air quality and reduce noise pollution.
Upgrading the footbridge over the tram tracks into Wandle Park with street lighting, new surfacing and cycle and buggy channels, to improve pedestrian and cycle access between Wandle Park and the town centre.
