Fairfield redevelopment moves closer

The closing date of Farfield Halls ahead of its £30million transformation has been confirmed

Fairfield (Croydon) Ltd and Croydon Council have agreed to work together on a managed programme that would see the venue close on July 15 this year in preparation for a £30m transformation.

The authority says the two-year closure will allow for a comprehensive redevelopment of the ageing building into a spectacular arts and cultural centre, and part of a new vibrant cultural and educational quarter at College Green.

Councillor Tony Newman, leader of the council, said: “We're delighted to have reached a position that is in the best interest of both parties.

"We've been working alongside the board to help secure funding to support the process for a managed closure. We’re both in full agreement that everyone working at Fairfield is treated fairly and properly.

“Closing the venue is the best possible option; it will enable us to take this once-in-a-generation opportunity to totally transform Fairfield Halls into one of the most prestigious arts and entertainment venues in the country.

“Fairfield served the 20th century proudly and we will ensure that it will do the same in the 21st century, and for generations to come.”

Kate Vennell, chair of Fairfield (Croydon) Ltd's board, said: “The charity has always welcomed the significant investment in the Fairfield from the council.

"The council has been clear that it wants a rapid project and although we preferred phasing to allow continuing programme and community access, we appreciate its support for a managed closure.

""The council has reassured us it will start work immediately, deliver a high-quality project and engage the Fairfield charity in the future operations.

"I want to take this opportunity to recognise the achievements of Simon Thomsett, CEO of Fairfield, and our talented team, which was reflected in record attendances through Christmas 2015. We can feel proud that we're going out on a high.

"Over the next two years we will expand our work supporting young people to take part in cultural activities and providing compelling productions for them such as the Terriers drama.

"We will be announcing more on this future Fairfield programme over the next few months.”

Inspired home for Ben Eine’s ‘mesmerising’ artwork

Croydon's cultural quarter is to provide the home for the latest work by internationally-renowned street artist Ben Eine.

London property developer Inspired Homes has provided the blank canvas for the Londoner's work in the form of a nine-storey elevation on its Green Dragon House development.

Once complete, the mural will depict the word 'mesmerising' in Ben's graffiti-style letter formations.

Martin Skinner, founder and chief executive of Inspired Homes, said: “We are delighted to be able to support Ben Eine’s inspirational artistic work by offering him a blank canvas in the heart of Croydon’s flourishing art quarter.

"It fits with our passion of integrating with the community and encouraging inspiring activity locally.

"It also helps to put Croydon on the map once more, inspiring more people to come and live in this buzzing centre of arts, culture, dining and shopping.”

Ben's graffiti style letter formations shot to fame when prime minister David Cameron and his wife Samantha presented one of his works, using Eine's circus font, to American president Barack Obama as a gift on their first official state visit.

His latest work at one of Inspired Homes' innovative residential developments forms part of a wider initiative to reignite the London borough through art and redevelopment.

It is the latest part of a rebuilding of Croydon's art scene which has been led by Kevin Zuchowski-Morrison, founder of RISEgallery, and Vestalia Chilton who is in charge of curating phase two expansion of the arts quarter.

The growth in art has coincided with the town's multi-billion pound regeneration which is seeing previously dilapidated areas transformed into innovative and inspiring places to live and work.

“Croydon's many concrete buildings present a commanding canvas for large scale murals," said Vestalia.

"This is an area deserving of great street art, we hope that many more murals will go up after Ben has completed his.”

The 'mesmerising' mural will be completed on Friday, February 26.
